Origin

Shadow Wardens are the Order's trained killers, efficient and without hesitation. They have no names, only codenames, and the Mindseals in their bodies bind them to the Shadow Sovereign's will.

They have no features, only black hollows — yet they wear no masks, and share none of the Maskwalkers' bloodthirst. They are violet shadows that keep to the dark and leave no trace. Lately those shadows have been walking the Wulin far more often.

The Wardens keep ranks: common killers in black, the white-robed ones under Zuo Shang's hand, purple riders on the main roads, musketeers on the eaves. Blade, horse, and firearm each a lineage of its own, all answering the same command.

Members

  • Shadow Warden: A broad double-ended blade worked in relentless combination to overwhelm at close range; a violet figure that comes and goes in silence.
  • Shadow Warden Cavalry: Rides head-on down the main road, using the gallop to close in an instant. Sent by the new Shadow Sovereign to intercept Soul, and will not stop until one side is dead.
  • White-Robed Shadow Warden: Handpicked by Zuo Shang, white from crown to boots, skilled in both attack and defense, working pistols in between blade strokes. In the dead town of Pangzhen they lead patrols, seal the streets, and hold the courtyards.
  • Shadow Warden Musketeer: Keeps to high eaves and rooftops, picking targets off at long range or firing in bursts after a brief aim. They wait for the moment, then pull the trigger — more patient and colder than the ones who fight up close.
  • Wildfire Shadow Warden: Red-robed, double blades treated with phosphor powder, so every cut opens flesh and blooms with eerie green flame.
  • Blunderbuss Shadow Warden: Copper helm and armor, a tiger-headed blunderbuss with three barrels that fires in bursts while he dodges; at close quarters he swings the gun like a maul.
  • Shadow Warden Gunner: A faceless man in purple who rides his quarry down, shooting accurately at full gallop and swinging his blade with the horse's momentum. Tracking is his specialty.

Tactics

Their strength is coordination: gunfire at range, blades up close, cavalry breaking the line with sheer momentum, usually in pairs that cover each other.

That is also where to break them — take the musketeer off the roof, or stop the charge. Break one link and the rest of the attack comes apart; it is only their covering for one another that makes them look flawless.
