Origin

Outposts, mountain cabins, tunnels, and the Sha-Chi Tower lie scattered across the Crimson Forest and the valley. Most of these thirteen were picked up from a dead hand, a beam in an empty house, or beside a chopping block. Not one of them was cut for the person now carrying it.

The keys remain; the owners of the locks are mostly gone.

The Keys

  • Sha-Chi Furnace Inspection Crank: A grease-stained round crank, slightly warped by the heat. The handle reads "Inspection Port No. 2 Control Console, Lower Level, Sha-Chi Forging Furnace."
  • Cell Key: A prison key found in a Mandate disciple's pocket. Which cell in the Valley Outpost it opens is no longer clear.
  • Sha-Chi Tower Base Camp Gate Key: A key that once snapped in two, its teeth hastily fastened onto a short metal shaft. It opens the camp gate at the base of the Sha-Chi Tower.
  • Crimson Forest Cellar Crank: A tiger-headed crank found on the second floor of a mountain cabin, with traces of toxic gas still in its socket.
  • Forest Outpost Courtyard Key: In the years when smoke still curled from the outpost's chimneys, this key hung at the innkeeper's waist.
  • Cave Prison Key: A tarnished brass key with old mine dust in its grooves. The Mandate once confined their own who had undergone Transcension here; now the cells hold captured Mandate disciples.
  • Crimson Forest Secret Chamber Crank: An iron crank clenched in the hand of a Baishan disciple. It still held some warmth when her fingers were pried open.
  • Crimson Forest Tunnel Crank: Found beside the Butcher's chopping block. It may open another grisly passage.
  • Thieves' Camp Dungeon Key: A crude iron key with crooked teeth, just enough to open a cell door.
  • Crimson Forest Sha-Chi Tower Key: Reforged from broken parts, its teeth pitted as though eaten by corrosion. It opens the top level of the Sha-Chi Tower.
  • Village of Lu Cellar Key: Pieced together from several iron bars, with the character for "Lu" engraved at one end. Besides opening a hideout's hidden door, its owner used it for picking locks.
  • Old Man Gen's Brass Key: An old key passed down through generations, older even than Old Man Gen himself.
  • Tunnel Cage Key: A key made from a puppet's finger, three smaller fingers jutting from the knuckles to form the teeth. Villagers were not the only ones caged here; so were thieves from the Smuggler's Tunnel.

Purpose

Most of them open a door only once: a cellar, a cell, a secret chamber, a tower top. What waits behind is usually corpses, poison gas, or another door deeper in.
