Crystal Puppet Eyes

In the Herald's illusion, puppets are not mere decoration. Eyes, tongues, finger bones — the parts of a puppet were taken apart one by one and turned into mechanisms: remove them and they are keys, put them back and they are a puppet again.

The crystal eyes were made as a pair, one Yin and one Yang. Only together do they form a complete gaze; a single eye is only half a stare.

• Crystal Puppet Eye [Yang]: A white, fish-shaped form shows within the crystal, the Yang half of a taiji symbol. It forms a pair with the Yin eye.
• Crystal Puppet Eye [Yin]: The same make, holding a black, fish-shaped form, the Yin half of a taiji symbol, facing the Yang eye.
• Puppet's Tongue: A tongue-shaped key made of ceramic or finely polished bone. Three grooves at its base answer the three gates of the Herald's illusion; each gate it opens makes the Three-Eyed Puppet's tongue spring a little farther out.
• Puppet No. 44's Eye: The passage deep in the Smuggler's Tunnel is sealed by Puppet No. 44, and this eye is the key to its lock.

The eye must return to its socket before the lock will open; the tongue must advance a notch before a gate will yield. They are all parts of one puppet, scattered apart and left behind to serve as keys, and only together do they make the puppet whole again.
